Rigpa Glimpse of the Day for Nov 11 2008

    November 11

Open people ask me: “How long should I meditate? And when? Should I practice twenty minutes in the morning and in the evening, or is it better to do several short practices during the day?” Yes, it is good to meditate for twenty minutes, though that is not to say that twenty minutes is the limit. I have not found in the scriptures any reference to twenty minutes; I think it is a notion that has been contrived in the West, and I call it Meditation Western Standard Time.

The point is not how long you meditate; the point is whether the practice actually brings you to a certain state of mindfulness and presence, where you are a little open and able to connect with your heart essence. And five minutes of wakeful sitting practice is of far greater value than twenty minutes of dozing!

    The Job is Finished

We finished our mission with the pipelaying vessel Solitaire. She is the largest in the world laying the deepest pipe on record. What a treat to be a part of such an operation. The mates envited me up for a tour, spectacular. Had dinner, coffee and a tour of the bridge. I do love my job. Posted a few new pictures, hope you enjoy them.

We are already off to new adventures. As long as I have a good connection, like here in Houma, Lousaiana, it is pretty easy to publish to this blog.

    Learning to Love

Today I am learning to love. To get out of myself and into action helping another person helps not only them but myself as well. Why am I such a hard learner? Why does it take so long to let down the walls and let another person in? Tough. I am learning though, slowly but surely. Great holiday this year, off to work tomorrow and then my train trip in January. There is a link on my homepage, jameswhudgens, come on over and visit.

    Simplify My Life

It is Friday Morning at 0230 hours. I am enjoying my time in Galveston at the San Luis Resort and Spa. I slept for 6 hours this evening and am trying to get back adjusted to "land time". This morning finds me reflecting on my life and some of the sorted confusion arising from my technology. "When my technology outruns my spirit, it is time to slow down".

I have converted to Windows Live Mail and integrated all of my mail accounts to one location. Now with one click I can see my G Mail, AOL Mail, Hotmail and  Yahoo Mail. How cool is that.

And using Live Writer I now have access to my blog with one click and spell check to boot.

    Update and News

Well my taxes are done, months ago and the money already put to good use. Hope you did not have to pay to much.

My Coast Guard endorsements that I have been working on for the past year all came through. I am so happy to have reached this plateau in my vocation. It is a good time for me to enjoy the fruit of my labor. I am now an Apprentice Mate with a 200 GT 500 ITC endorsement. Ii have STCW 1995 and Radar endorsements also. I am looking forward to the next 10 years in the towing industry and obtaining my Master of Towing endorsement over the next 1 to 2 years. www.northbanktowing.com for more info about my company.

A dear friend of mine passed on this past week. www.davidagumm.org is a site I maintain for his family. Visit the site and read about a great man and see the guest book for testimonies of the lives he touched. He will be missed by all.

My new domain is up and running. www.jameswhudgens.com i will use this site more and more over the coming years and continue to build my Web and Consulting business from there.

Visit my sites and drop me an e-mail. Thanks for checking in with me.

    Rebuilding the Gulf

For the month of October and November we worked moving a rig and setting new platforms. Here is a shot of one of the tugs moving the material barge into place beside the Derick Barge. It is amazing work and I am fortunate to be a part of this whole process.

I am learning a lot and hope to continue working this venue for years to come.

    School

Today was my first day of class for my Master of Towing endorsement. The new job is going well but due to new licensing requirements of the USCG, I find myself back in school. I have not been in these type of classes since 1995 when I studied for my original license and since I did my instructor training for Scuba in 1993.

They say you can not teach an old dog new tricks but I think this salty dog can learn a new trick or two.

I feel good about my decision to stick with this and "press on", as my dad always said.

    Taxes

There are two things certain, taxes and death.

A dear friend of mine passed away last night about 10:00 pm. She will be greatly missed.

My taxes are done for the year and amended for the past 3 years, so I guess from this point on I will be venturing into the uncertainty of the new.

    Welcome to Tow Boats

The last few months have been busy to say the least. Lost my crew boat job and took a month or two off, travled to New Mexico and Colorado and landed a job with North Bank Towing. Amazing how life works. More money, slower pace, chance to really use my skills and a new challenge.

Spent a week in the hospital back in November, lack of rest and stress from losing my job. Being the diagnosed bi-polar that I am, I never really watch things like diet and rest. I just blast through life and take it as it comes. Hopefully the new, slower paced job will help.

    Katrina / Rita / Wilma

It has been an Amazing few months. What began as a simple evacuation from Katrina, turned to vacation in the central pacific, holiday in California, evac from Rita, home in Missouri City, hospital stay at West Oaks, loss of job on the Gulf and now Wilma is threatening the Gulf.

Do you remember a time when three cat 5 hurricanes took aim on the gulf in your lifetime in three months?

    I think not.

I am pausing for a Moment of Silence to remember those affected and those in harms way.
